Andy Turner has been making a living selling pieces of wire made into readable writing in the form of Name Jewelry since 1985.

My aim now is to pass this skill on and all related skills to as many people as possible with my products (and this blog of course) to help everyone enjoy this amazing craft and the easy going life that it can bring.

Hello Andy, I have the e-book and it is great, clear pictures and easy to follow instructions. I am doing well with my bending. Just one quick question. About how big are the letters that you make. I know that size will be longer, obviously for more letters, but how large (or rather small) should I be aiming for to make a nice necklace.
My letter shapes are good now I am trying to get a comfortable and consistent size.
    Thanks,
    Karen K

Hi Karen, Great to hear you are doing well ! OK, here are the dimensions of a name in the diagrams below:

    Sue Dimensions
    Joanne Dimensions
    Margaret Dimensions

Generally, the spacings between the letters, and also the letter sizes decrease with the length of the name.

Spacing between letters is between 1 – 2 mm (1/32 to 1/16 of an inch)

Thank you for your video. I picked up wire art work about 7 years ago and bought different tapes from other wire workers and even took classes from someone else. But the presures of the work and the inspiration needed to keep going got to much for the head to hold and an interest. My work has been praised by experts and I felt I masterd the craft for my satisfaction. I just quit and have not picked it up for the past 4 years. Today I had a Doctor friend who saved my life years ago called and asked me to make him a pendent with a name. I would do anything for him because of the life saving experence with him . My wife got on your web site and I will give him the best I can from my heart. You keep up the good work and I will do your vedio justice.

Hi Wayne, Thanks for that, what a great and inspiring story ! I’m glad you are well and it’s funny, I was thinking last week about a doctor that saved my life too way back in the late seventies after I had a motor cycle accident – so I am forever grateful to him. Yes, the wire bending has been a big part in my life since the mid eighties and now I get the satisfaction of teaching others this amazing craft that carried me through all those years.

All the best with your future and your name making (if you decide to take it up again) – Andy.

    Andy hi,

Which size of wire do you use for your name writing?

    thank you

Hi Sylvie, I use three types of wire, silver plate and sterling silver. All are 1mm diameter or 18 gauge. Wherever possible I try to get the wire hard drawn, or as hard as possible. The hardness helps retain the strength of the name. Cheers, Andy.
